A Guide to Shopping at Clearance Sales – Seasonal Sundays # 135

Seasonal Sunday Teapot copy

Welcome to Seasonal Sundays.

One of the wonderful things about this time of year are the fabulous After Christmas Clearance Sales. This past week Kathleen (of Cuisine Kathleen) and I were lucky enough to meet at Christmas Tree Shops and discover some amazing finds! I did not receive any compensation of any sort from Christmas Tree Shops for anything in this post – just to be clear!

I’m constantly asked how can I have so many dishes – from both a cost and storage (always an issue). Purchasing during clearance sales really helps. And then, as folks start to get into it, they say they wouldn’t know what to do with that odd ball clearance item. After all, it’s in clearance because no one else wanted it!

You really need to use your imagination when you’re bargain hunting through a clearance section. It’s not for the faint of heart.

But that is when you get the most amazing deals. Sometimes it’s easy to get swept up in the, “Well, it was only a dollar” aura, but I really try to think about it as I try to purchase in sets of 12 and that does start to add up plus storage space is a HUGE issue for me.

Jeweles 015

Jeweles 017 These bread and butter plates are by Mary Carol and were a super buy at just $1.00 @.They come in four different images: steer (shown above), sheepJeweles 019, ducks Jeweles 027and pigs. Now, I can see folks shying away from such plates as you think, just how often do I want to set a table with animals? But what I focused on was the edge and the coloring.Copy of Jeweles 015 It’s a perfect plate (bread and butter size) to place a soup bowl or compote upon. Even with the animals showing, I conjure up a beautiful Fall table, not necessarily accenting the animal nature, but drawing more on the overall feel of the plate.

Jeweles 010Jeweles 013 This one was an easy choice. They were $1.50 @. I have a few pieces of Friendly Village, so clearly they will work with those, but in reality, the more I collect the less likely I am to buy a full set of anything. I truly like to mix and match. That way you can have a completely different look every time you use the plate. I’m likely to pull out the brown or the olive green and layer this plate upon a solid brown or olive green dinner plate. You could always use a cream or off white. Maybe the napkin could pull out that peachy pink of the trees for a punch of color.

Jeweles 024

Jeweles 021These were an easy choice for me. They too were down to a dollar (even lower than the tagged price!), but moreover my son has recently been accepted at a college whose is the black squirrel! How could I pass them up. BUT if I didn’t have that personal connection, I may have passed them up, despite the price, as they say HAND WASH ONLY. I’m a dishwasher girl. If it can’t go in the dishwasher, I probably won’t buy it. Now, that being said, sometimes I will buy them and if it looks like it can go in the dishwasher, I’ll run one through. If it gets ruined (and sometimes they do), I’ll return the rest. It was a one dish experiment. Sometimes at clearance sales, returning is not an option so it’s a judgment call.Jeweles 020

They also came in a quail design (and some other designs which I didn’t care for). If you don’t like an alternate pattern, don’t feel like you have to get them. I picked up a few quail to mix in. I’m imagining them on a table with black toile!

Jeweles 001

I love these! I’m imagining it on top of a white dinner plate on a beautiful Christmas table with bits of silver floating through. Now listen up bargain hunters, these technically are NOT plates. They are for candles. You have to be careful that an item is food safe, if it technically isn’t a plate. My crazy mind immediately saw it as a plate. I could only get 5 of these, so I am on the prowl for a few more.

Jeweles 035

These lovely babies were not in clearance (so I’m pretty certain you could get them if you so desired), but how could I pass them up at that price! Jeweles 036An excellent addition to my mercury glass collection.

Jeweles 039 These were also not in the clearance section but at $2.99 for all four, how could I go wrong. Love the chalk board front. This is what I was thinking:Jeweles 042

What kind of shopper are you? I use every bit of my purchase.Jeweles 032

The wrapping papers get stacked for when I need to store some things away…

Jeweles 030…and even the plastic bags get reused. Stored in a pitcher (come to think of it, that was a Christmas Tree purchase from ages ago) by the back door at the ready for dog walking!!!

Have you been bargain hunting?

Yes, I have been bargain hunting, again just today! I could just kick myself because I walked right past the Christmas Tree Shop. I suppose it's just as well because I don't have any kitchen storage space left. Your plates are gorgeous, all of them. Love those Friendly Village. You sure had a great day shopping, wish I could come with you...........Thanks for hosting.

I love all of your scores! If I only find one or two of something, I buy it. I find mixing and matching is the most enjoyable and unique way to decorate a table or to decorate a house. I have never ever been a matchy matchy kind of girl. Thanks for hosting and always being an inspiration to us.

Big Hugs,
Susan and Bentley

I try to reuse all the wrappings too! I actually won't let the shop wrap my dishes, I want to do it myself. They use WAY too much paper. You guys found some amazing bargains. I want to go whopping with you. Dianne

The Friendly Village were only a dollar, I checked the slop, unless I got an extra bargain, lol!

I thought you would show a better pic of the napkins than I did, as I didn't take mine out of the bag and they are hard to see. But you didn't include them in our Bargain Bonanza. :)
Thanks for hosting. I don't join in often as I usually do only one post a week and it is old news by the time Seasonal Sunday rolls around.

You two ladies sure do have fun together...I love the animal plates and would have no problem using them for anything....I love the colors of them...I wondered what you gals wold have come home with if the other outlet that you shop at was still opened....where did you go to get all the pottery from for cheap...was it the Williams Sonoma clearance center??

Sarah said...

No Christmas Tree Shop near us, or I would be there tomorrow looking for some of those black and white squirrel plates. Love the little plates with the animals int he center too. Like you, I have to be careful about limited storage, but it's difficult to pass up such bargains. Look forward to seeing the tablescapes set with these. Great finds!
Thanks for hosting each week........Sarah

Just like you, I am always bargain hunting but I am not as lucky as you finding those kind of bargains cause we do not have a Christmas Tree store nearby. Enjoyed looking at your purchases....Christine

I just linked up my post about my trip last Sat. to the CTS!!! LOL!!
I had a great time there!! The Friendly Village dishes were still $3.99 , not on sale, at my CTS so I didn't buy them. But I did buy lots of other things!!
Don't you just love that place????

Thanks so much for hosting!!

I use the paper too for re-wrapping and i use the bags for my wastebaskets in the house!! LOL!!

Oh sweetie, I shop just like you. I really am a bargain shopper so I love after season sales. Although, I have way too many seasonal dishes. Now I try, notice I try to resist. I love mix and matching so if it's cute and a great price I do not shy away. I too save the papers and bags for wrapping. Love your purchases! I think the animal plates would be so fun for Spring also. I always think of the renewal of things and all of the new baby animals that seem to arrive. Thanks for hosting.

Wow! It would seriously be dangerous for me if we had a CTS nearby! I do love seeing the bargains you & Kathleen find. Thanks for hosting each week :-)

Good for you for taking the time to bargain shop. I think about it but don't do it and just hope I stumble across some wonderful things during the year. You found some great treasures that you will do all kinds of creative things with.

I love hearing about when you and Kathleen hit the Christmas Tree Shop. You get the nicest things at the best prices. Sadly, we don't have one around here. Your tips in this post are fantastic, too, right down to saving the paper!

I wish I had remembered your party, I would have joined this week. I need to jot the day down.

Thanks for all of the shopping hints. I've made notes and you've really got some great ideas, especially about washing one dish to see how it does in the dishwasher. Brilliant!

Also thank you for hosting SS. Hope you are having a lovely weekend.

That's a great tip about testing the "Dishwasher durability." Your plate collections and taste are amazing. I am up in the mountains right now where there is not a lot of shopping...but I am so encouraged to check out the two thrift shops in town. I want to start mixing more like you do.

Awesome post!

I resisted all the after Christmas sales since I have an entire room in my house for Christmas storage and it's going to be thinned out at first yard sale

It's so had not to buy blue & white dishes, which I have always loved

Wow! You and Kathleen win the shopping awards. I rarely run across any Christmas things here. It seems most places are picked over even before Christmas and what's left seems to be damaged. Maybe that's not a bad thing..:) that way I won't shop so much. Wish we had a Christmas Tree Shop down South. Have a great week and enjoy your great new things.

This is such a great idea for thrift shopping...looking at plates to see how the EDGES would look, even if you're not crazy about what's in the middle! Thanks for sharing this! Hope you had a great weekend! =D

Once again you got some CRAZY great deals!!!!!!! A trip to a Christmas Tree Shop is on my Bucket List. You always find such great stuff there! I didn't do a lot of clearance sale shopping this year. My space issues have reached a critical point. I am, in fact, spending these next few days doing some serious rearranging and purging. I started on the closet in my office, and doggone it if I didn't have THREE printers in there!!! I only need one! Out they went into the Goodwill pile! The dishes and linens and stuff will all stay, though. There's ALWAYS future use for those around here! :-) Have a great week!

Oh to have a CTS nearby~ I love seeing all your bargains! I wouldn't have been able to pass those wonderful Mary Carol animal plates up!

Kathy @ Creative Home Expressions said...

Great finds! They did not have the transferware village dishes at my CTS when I went, but they did have a red and white transferware that I picked up. Not on clearance, but most times now I just pick up two since it is just hubby and I. I'll have to go back and look for those dishes though ~ love that scene on them. Kathleen is always teasing me about CTS. There was one about 20 minutes away from me on Long Island and I never went. Finally got to one when we moved to Ohio {about 10 minutes away} and it's always a favorite stop now.
